Mikayla's 3rd Grade Party

Mikayla's class had their end of the year party today for 3rd grade.  Myself and two other parent's are room mom's for the class. We planned a pizza picnic style lunch,  sponge water relay game,  three legged race, leap frog, popsicles and t-shirt autographing.  They all seemed to love it.  In fact there was time left at the end of the day and so Mrs. Crawford asked them to name the funest thing about the school year.  A lot of student's mentioned the party today, especially the sponge water relay game. Unforunately Mikayla had to miss the picnic part of the party.  She was having lunch with the principal for getting the principal's award.  She wasn't happy about that!

 Leap Frog.  Mikayla was the first frog (in the white shirt).  This game probably was their least favorite one.  They didn't like being bent over waiting for all 22 kids to go through the line.  There was also some hair that got pulled, backs that got hurt, and kids who fell over the top of someone else.

I found this idea on Pinterest and thought it would make a very nice gift for a teacher.  So I made these two for Mikayla's teacher Mrs. Crawford and her student teacher Mrs. Rodrigues.  The teacher had a Shutterfly website for the class with pictures from throughout the year, I was able to get pictures off the class web site to make these.  They were easy to make, but time consming because of the steps and drying time.  I asked parents to purchase gift cards in small increments and they went into the pot as well.  The teachers loved them.  I even had other teachers on campus coming up to me telling me how much they liked the pots.

I found this idea on Facebook via Sugardoodle so I helped Mikayla make some up for each student in her class.  Very cute, simple gift. 

Principal's Award, 100 AR Points and Safety Patrol Awards

Two weeks ago Mrs. Crawford (Mikayla's 3rd grade teacher) sent me the following email:

I have great news! I am sure you may be wondering why Mikayla has not received a life skills award this year because she of course deserves one! Well, that is because I have been waiting to present her as my Principal’s Award winner!!! J

This means she will be winning the Giants jersey hanging in my class, as well. So, if you don’t mind keeping it a surprise, I would appreciate it! I will announce it to the class and present her with the jersey right before the assembly at 2:15 (if you want to come early to see that). Then, she can wear the jersey to the assembly to show it off.

The assembly is on Friday, May 25^th at 2:30 in the cafeteria.

 I am sure you are as excited as I am! I am so proud of how hard Mikayla has worked this year and her example of stellar class behavior. She has had to overcome so much over the last few years with her hearing difficulties and yet still manages to EXCEL in all she does. She is such as STAR!

Friday morning Ashlee called me at work and told me she was going to be awarded with an award for reaching 100 Accelerated Reader Points.  She didn't know that I was already planning on being at the assembly, so I just told her that I would try to make it. 

Little did I know that life would through us a curve ball, and trying to get to the school for the assembly that day was a bit of a challenge.  But in between everything that was happening (see below) I was able to make it to the school and get back to the hospital before my brother got wheeled into surgery.

 Two days a week this entire school year Ashlee has been on Safety Patrol (she helps direct traffic through the school parking lot two days a week after school and helps students safely cross the crosswalks).  Today she along with 37 other safety patrol students received an award for their service.

Great job Mikayla and Ashlee we are proud of you and your accomplishments.

Life's Curve ball

  Shortly after Ashlee called me at work, my mom called me at work crying and asked me to come be with her at the hospital.  I asked why she was at the hospital and she said it's Adam (my brother), my brother is a truck driver and he transports fuel.  The first thing that crossed my mind was that he had been in an accident.  My mom said I think it's his appendix's or kidney stones.  I hung up the phone and got to the hospital.  Long story short, I arrived at the hospital and could tell that Adam was in a huge amount of pain.  The ER was full and so trying to get help was a lengthy process.  After 4hrs in the ER they finally did a CT scan and discovered that his appendix's had ruptured.  3hrs after discovering the appendix's had ruptured they took him into surgery to remove the appendix's.  Once they got into surgery they realized that he had an abscess, and a really bad infection as well.  The surgeon explained to us that they had to put a drainage tube in for the abscess and that my brother would need to be in the hospital at least 4 days.  And on top of all this, my brother just started a new job 3 months ago and has been waiting for his 90 days to be up so he can get health insurance.  Needless to say, he is suppose to get health insurance next week!  Yikes.

Annie Oakley

For the last 5 weeks now, Mikayla has had an assignment to do on Annie Oakley.  She had to read a autobiography on Annie Oakley and fill out a weekly worksheet on what she read.  Today she had to go to school dressed like Annie Oakley, answer interview questions about her life as Annie Oakley, and bring a prop.  School rules made it hard to bring a prop for Annie Oakley.  Annie Oakley was known for her sharpshooting skills.  Unfortunately, she couldn't bring her bb gun unloaded, or even make anything out of paper that resembled a gun.  So we decided to make a poster board with pictures of Annie Oakley and take in a target that Mikayla had shot with her bb gun.  We were in such a hurry to get out the door this morning, that I didn't get any pictures of the poster board she made and the teacher asked her to leave it at school on display for others to see so it hasn't made it home yet for me to take a picture of it.  Here are some pictures of our cute Annie Oakley.

Ashlee's 5th grade class celebrated the end of their 5th grade year today with a party.  The teacher keeps group points for behavior, etc.  The group with the most points gets to shave the teachers head at the end of the school year.  Ashlee's group consisted of 5 girls.  They had the highest points, so they got to shave their teacher Mr. Sundy's head.

 Before the party began there was a baseball game.  The staff members played against the graduating 8th graders.  The whole school watches the game.

 After the baseball game.  The 5th graders walked to a near by park for a party.  They had a hot dog BBQ lunch and got to play activities at the park for the rest of day.  Families were allowed to come and celebrate with their children.

The school year has flown by.  Every school year seems to go by quickly anymore, but this year seemed to pass faster than any other year.  Next year Ashlee moves across the campus to middle school.  I can't believe that she will be in 6th grade.  Ashlee is a little apprehensive about the move over to middle school,  I am hoping that the transition goes smoothly.

Swim Trials

After a long but fun trip to Alcatraz yesterday.  We had to get up bright and early this morning for Ashlee's first swim event of the season.  Today Ashlee had swim trials.  She swam in 5 events (IM, 50 yd backstroke, 50 yd breaststroke, 50 yd butterfly, and 50 yd freestyle).  She got first place in her heats for the backstroke and breastroke.  Ashlee is off to a good start.  I think we made the right decision by putting her on a different swim team this year.  She seems to be getting coached better and learning how to do the strokes better.
